The European Brandenburg Ensemble (EBE) was founded to celebrate Trevor Pinnock's 60th birthday. Leading players of European orchestras such as the English Concert, Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, the Orchestra of Age of Enlightenment and Il Giardino Armonico pledged time to work in this unique and remarkable international formation.

With the support of the City and University of Sheffield the ensemble embarked on its voyage of discovery in July 2006 with a short study period of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, re-examining musicological insights and theories and changing fashions of performance of these innovative works. The ensemble returned to Sheffield in December to celebrate Trevor's birthday with a concert at Sheffield City Hall and a new recording of the concertos which took place in the ballroom of the City Hall. During 2007 the EBE toured in Europe and the Far East.
